Die VP dienen als Planungsgrundlage für Infrastrukturprogramme von Strasse und Schiene sowie für verkehrspolitische und raumplanerische Entscheide. Zudem fliessen die Ergebnisse in die Energieperspektiven und in Berechnungen von Lärm- und Schadstoffemissionen ein. Die Szenarien sind überdies mit den Prognosen für den Luftverkehr des Bundesamts für Zivilluftfahrt (BAZL) abgestimmt.
