Die Schweiz hat im Rahmen ihrer Freihandelsabkommen (FHA) bereits seit 2008 verschiedentlich Texte über den elektronischen Handel abgeschlossen. Meistens erfolgte dies anlässlich von FHA der European Freetrade Association (EFTA).
Im Jahr 2019 entschied das EFTA Committee on Third-Country Relations (TCC), dass eine Arbeitsgruppe einberufen werden soll, die einen E-Commerce Modelltext für künftige FHA der EFTA erarbeiten soll.
Der Modelltext wird über zahlreiche Bestimmungen zum elektronischen Handel verfügen.
